What a glorious day! I have heard that there are two very skilled tailors in the city. They claim to make the most beautiful clothes ever seen. I must see them!
Minister 1:
Your Majesty, they say their clothes are so fine that only the wise can see them. Those who are not smart will not see anything at all.
Emperor:
That sounds interesting. Bring them in immediately!
(Two tailors enter, dressed in fancy robes.)
Tailor 1:
Your Majesty, we are honored to serve you. We have made a special suit for you — one that no one else has ever worn.
Emperor:
I am very excited to see it. When will it be ready?
Tailor 2:
It will be ready by tomorrow. But please, do not let anyone else see it before then. It is very delicate.
Emperor:
Very well. I shall wait patiently.
(The tailors exit. The ministers exchange worried glances.)
Minister 1:
Do you think they really can make such clothes?
Minister 2:
I don’t know. But if we say we can see them, we will keep our jobs. If we say we can’t, we may lose everything.
Minister 1:
You’re right. Let’s just pretend.
Scene 2: The Next Day
(The Emperor is now wearing what appears to be a new suit. The tailors are standing beside him.)
Emperor:
How does this suit look? Do you think it’s beautiful?
Minister 1:
Your Majesty, it is truly magnificent. No one has ever worn such a fine garment.
Minister 2:
Yes, it’s absolutely stunning. You look like a king!
Tailor 1:
We are honored to have served you.
Tailor 2:
Indeed, your Majesty, you are the most elegant person in the whole kingdom.
(A crowd gathers outside the palace.)
People of the Kingdom:
What is the Emperor wearing? Is he dressed properly?
Minister 1 (whispering):
Don’t say anything. Just act as if you can see the clothes.
People of the Kingdom (murmuring):
I don’t see anything. What is he wearing?
Minister 2 (nervously):
He is wearing the finest clothes in the world. You just need to believe.
Person 1:
But... there’s nothing on him!
Person 2:
No, he’s wearing something. It’s invisible!
Person 3:
Wait... maybe it’s just too beautiful to see?
(Everyone starts to nod, trying to believe.)
Scene 3: The Parade
(The Emperor walks through the city, surrounded by his ministers and people.)
Emperor:
Look at me! I am the most powerful and stylish ruler in the world!
Ministers:
Yes, Your Majesty! You are the greatest!
People of the Kingdom:
He looks amazing! So elegant!
(Suddenly, a child runs up to the Emperor.)

The Emperor has no clothes on!
People of the Kingdom (shocked):
What? He has no clothes?
Minister 1:
No, that’s not true. You must be mistaken.
Child:
I saw it! He’s wearing nothing at all!
Minister 2:
Silence, child! Don’t speak like that!
Child:
But it’s true! I can see it!
(The crowd falls silent. Then, someone begins to laugh. Others join in.)
Person 1:
He’s right! The Emperor is naked!
Person 2:
We were all pretending to see clothes that weren’t there!
Emperor (stunned):
This is... this is impossible. How could this happen?
Ministers (in unison):
We... we were just trying to protect your dignity.
Emperor (quietly):
I was foolish. I believed in lies because I was afraid of being seen as ignorant.
Child:
You should have listened to the truth.
Emperor (smiling slightly):
Perhaps I will wear something more sensible next time.
(The crowd cheers. The Emperor walks away, more humble than before.)
Narrator (offstage):
